Today we are reviewing the Asteroid Field themed Terrain Mat from Deep-Cut Studio. This type of mat is great for use in space combat games like the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game, Battlefleet Gothic, and Firestorm Armada, and can add a huge amount to the cinematic feel of your games. Deep Cut Studio also make mats suitable for wargames like Warhammer 40k, check out our review of their Warzone themed Terrain Mat if you missed it.
Here is the Asteroid Field Terrain Mat as it was delivered to us. We’ve opted for the 3’x3′ (91.5 x 91.5 cm) version as this will work well for Star Wars X-Wing, but its also available in other sizes (all the way up to 6’x4′) for use in similar games. The 3’x3′ mat is priced at £22.90 (around $36) from the Deep-Cut Studio store.
The packaging tube is made from a very thick card with the Deep-Cut logo printed on it. It’s just over 3 feet long and comes with plastic stoppers in each end. It feels very durable and so should be easily reusable as storage for our terrain mat.
On opening up the packaging we can see our Asteroid Field Terrain Mat rolled up inside. The tube is a little longer than the mat so there’s no danger of damaging the edge of your mat during in delivery or storage.
Pulling the mat from its packaging we can see that it’s made from the same durable PVC with a slightly textured back which we saw in our previous Terrain Mat Review.
The mat looks great when rolled out on the table, the PVC gaming surface is non-textured with a highly detailed printed surface, and the whole thing feels quite durable. You can see some slight curling around some edges (not helped by our two tables not quite lining up!) but we found with our other Terrain Mat that after a few uses, or if your roll the mat the other way, it will soon be laying flat. The Asteroid Field Terrain Mat is also useful for clearly defining the gaming area even if your table is larger or the wrong shape for the game you play.
Here are some close up photos of some of the details on the Asteroid Field Terrain Mat. We think its beautiful, the artist Jan Jasinski has done a great job.
In the bottom right corner of the mat is the Deep-Cut Studio logo, its pretty small and we didn’t find it intrusive at all.
Here we can see a battle in progress with a selection of Imperial and Rebel forces from the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game. The Asteroid Field Terrain Mat is providing a great looking and immersive background to the battle.
When you’re playing games like Star Wars X-Wing, its all about the cinematic feel of the battle and the Asteroid Field Terrain Mat goes a long way in providing a beautiful and immersive backdrop to the games. It’s relatively low cost, and also light-weight and very portable in it’s packaging tube so would be easy to take with you to a game if needed.
