This tutorial will show you a simple and cheap way to convert you own combi-melta guns for use in Warhammer 40k Space Marine armies. Combi-weapons can often be an excellent way to equip your troops, but very few kits actually include them. In our Iron Guard army we think it will be useful to have a bunch of combi-meltas available for our Sternguard, so we needed to find an easy and low cost way to make more, here’s what we came up with.
Here is what the end product will look like, as you can see this weapon has elements from both the standard boltgun and melta gun. This looks very similar to the official combi-melta gun and its pretty easy to make, so why not have a go yourself?
To make the above combi-melta gun, you will need 1 melta gun and 1 boltgun. Plastic melta guns will be easiest to work with but if you are struggling to find one, Games Workshop do sell sets of metal melta guns in the bitz part of their site.
We’ll start by chopping up the bolter, all that’s needed here is to cut the barrel away from the main body of the gun. Keep both pieces as we will need them later.
The melta gun needs a little more chopping up, this time we’ll separate the barrel and fuel cell from the main body of the gun. The body is no longer needed, just hold onto the melta barrel and fuel cell.
You could make the above cuts with a normal hobby knife, but we find that flat ended blades like the one in this picture make it easier. This knife came in a pack with a whole selection of blades from our local Poundland/Dollar Store.
Now we simply need to glue the parts together as to complete our combi-melta. Firstly, glue the bolter barrel back onto the bolter, but this time much lower down so that its in line with the hand grip.
The next step is to add the melta barrel on top of the bolter barrel at the front of our combi-melta so far.
The last step in assembling out combi-melta conversion is attaching the melta fuel cell to the side of the gun.
The finished product is easily recognisable as a combi-melta, and works well alongside our previous combi-plasma conversions.
Here’s one of our converted Iron Guard marines carrying the combi-plasma conversion. Now to make a bunch more for our Sternguard!
We’d love to hear how you get on with making your own combi-melta guns, so let us know in the comments below.
