This tutorial will show you a simple and cheap way to convert you own combi-plasma guns for use in Warhammer 40k Space Marine armies. Combi-weapons can often be an excellent way to equip your troops, but very few kits actually include them. In our Iron Guard army we plan to use quite a few combi-plasma for our Tactical Squad sergeants and Sternguard, so we needed to find an easy and low cost way to make more, here’s what we came up with.
Here is what the end product will look like, as you can see this weapon has elements from both the standard boltgun and plasma weaponry. We think it’ll look good on our marines, and its pretty easy to make, so why not have a go yourself?
To make the above combi-plasma gun, you will need 1 boltgun and 1 plasma pistol, both are quite common pieces in 40k Space Marine kits.
First we’ll chop up the bolter. You need to cut away the barrel at the front and keep it for later, along with cutting a section at the top of the bolter away as shown, which can be discarded.
Secondly we need to cut away some of the plasma pistol as shown below, the top part is what we are looking to keep.
You could make the above cuts with a normal hobby knife, but we find that flat ended blades like the one in this picture make it easier. This knife came in a pack with a whole selection of blades from our local Poundland/Dollar Store.
Now we simply need to glue the parts together as to complete our combi-plasma. Firstly, glue the top of the plasma pistol, to the main part of the bolter. If you are left with any gaps, you can fill them with green stuff.
Then glue on the barrel in the gap beneath the tip of the plasma pistol …and that’s all there is to it.
Here’s one of our converted Iron Guard marines carrying the combi-plasma conversion. Now to make a bunch more for our Sternguard!
We’d love to hear how you get on with making your own combi-plasma guns, so let us know in the comments below.
