Terrain mats are a great way to create an immersive and cinematic backdrop to your battles. After seeing some of our other reviews, gamemat.eu contacted us and asked if we’d like to review one of their new G-Mats, a range of highly detailed rubber-backed mats designed for use in wargames such as Warhammer, 40k, Infinity, and Deadzone.
After having a look through their range, we settled on a 6×4 Snow Storm G-Mat as it looks perfect for Warhammer 40k. The 6×4 G-Mat would normally be priced at € 64,00 (around £47.50 or $72), Gamemat.eu also sell G-Mats in 4×4 which would work well for other wargames and skirmish games. Here you can see our package as it arrived.
Inside the package we found our 6×4 Snow Storm G-Mat. It’s a lot heavier than other terrain mats we have, and is roughly 2-3mm thick including the rubber backing. It feels extremely sturdy and should last a long time. Due to the thickness of the G-Mat you don’t get loud dice sounds when rolling on it as they are slightly cushioned.
Here’s the rubber back we mentioned, it does a great job as a non-slip surface, this G-Mat is going nowhere once you roll it out on your table. The second picture shows the topside of the G-Mat which is very smooth, nicely printed and water resistant. It’s also a matte finish so there was no reflection of glare from the lighting.
The heaviness and rubber backing make this a real nice mat to roll out on the table, it’s heavy enough that it just rolls out completely flat with no curling at all at the edges. As you can see our playing area is quite a bit larger than 6×4 feet as we have pushed 3 tables together, but having a printed terrain mat means you can easily and clearly define the playing area of your game.
Here are some close up shot of some of the details on this G-Mat, we really like this design, it should work well for lots of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic games.
Here you can see we have added some ruins and craters from Games Workshop to our G-Mat. The design on the mat with it’s various roads and platforms provides lots of places where terrain fits nicely and looks great.
And finally, here are a few photos of a completely mad Warhammer 40k battle on the backdrop of the G-Mat. As you can see, having this highly detailed backdrop makes the battles so much more cinematic than a plain gaming surface.
Overall we think this kind of mat is a great addition to any wargame, it adds a great deal of immersion and cinematic feel to the battles, especially compared to a plain gaming surface. We love that these G-Mats roll out completely flat every time and have a non-slip rubber back which works well. These are a little heavier than other mats at approx. 3.5kg, so do bear that in mind if you need a mat you can carry to your friends house for a game. The G-Mats feel really durable, so would make a great and long-lasting solution for a gaming club or similar and could easily be rolled up at the end of the night.
