Today we’re bringing you a double gaming mat review! These are the Urban Commando gaming mat and Battleground gaming mat from Artistic Impressions, a UK based company specialising in high quality print services and have recently expanded into producing a large range of gaming mats. Both of the gaming mats we chose are 6×4′ which is great for games like Warhammer Fantasy, 40k, and Bolt Action, but these mats are available in various sizes right down to 3×3′ for skirmish games.
Here you can see how our 2 gaming mats arrived, both packaged in a thick card tube which we’ll be able to reuse as storage and transport for these mats. Both the Urban Commando and Battleground mats are priced at £45.83 (around $68) when chosen in the 6×4′ size.
The packaging includes the Artistic Impressions logo, and white plastic caps on each end to keep the mats inside safe.
Opening up the first of the tubes, we’re pleasantly surprised to see that Artistic Impressions includes an internal plastic bag for each mat, protecting the printed surface from rubbing against the inside of the tube. This allows Artistic Impressions to roll these mats with the printed side facing out, meaning when you unroll it, you shouldn’t get edges trying to curl up towards you. Removing the gaming mat from the tube and bag we can see that this one is the Battleground mat.
According to the site, these gaming mats are printed on a high quality 510gsm blockout PVC vinyl, and taking a closer look at the printed surface of this mat we can see that its a very smooth and clean finish. The reverse of the mat is a solid grey colour, and is again very smooth.
Here you can see some of the details printed on this mat, there’s plenty of rocky outcrops and scorched earth for your troops to manoeuvre though.
On rolling out the Battleground gaming mat it clearly defines our 6×4′ playing area over the 3 tables we have pushed together (even though they are not all quite the same height!). This mat is printed with terrain that is suitable for a range of game settings and scales, anything from fantasy settings, to modern or historical games could work well here.
But lets not forget this is a double gaming mat review, we also have the Urban Commando gaming mat to try out…
The Urban Commando mat provides an urban setting perfect for city fights, with wide roads suitable for 28mm tanks, plus areas of rough ground for placing buildings or ruins and also some central areas of greenery.
Rolling this mat out on the table it already looks like a great environment for a wargame, we’re eager to try it out! This is actually a pretty cool design with it’s symmetry meaning if you’re playing a particularly large game, Warhammer 40k Apocalypse for example, you can place 2 or more of these mats together and all the roads/streets will line up.
Eager to battle, we threw down a selection of terrain pieces, these ones are mostly produced by Games Workshop. The terrain we chose to use is pretty sparse, but you could easily place a selection of large buildings or ruins on the mat to give the game a totally different feel.
Here’s the Urban Commando gaming mat in action, adding a great cinematic backdrop to our Warhammer 40k battle.
Using printed gaming mats in your wargames really helps in creating a cinematic and immersive experience while you play. The Battleground mat is more generic, suiting a wide range of games, while the Urban Commando is more tied into modern or post-apocalyptic settings. These thin style mats (rather than the foam backed ones) are light enough to easily carry around if you are travelling to a game, and are well protected in their card tube and inner bags.
